With the proliferation of all the sites we log in to, and security breaches on the rise, it is a requirement these days to use highly secure passwords. Also, not using the same password for every site we log into is recommended.  What do we do to manage all these passwords? The solution is simple – use a password manager! As a leader in San Diego IT support, we research best password managers for our clients.

Currently on the market there are many password manager programs. Sure, you can use the “Website & App Passwords” feature on an iPhone, but not everyone has an iPhone. Web browsers offer to save passwords, but it is not safe. Web browsers do not encrypt passwords and rely on the built-in security of your computer.

The following password manager apps are the top two that I found to be ultimately secure and user friendly.  We will examine some of the pros and cons of each.

1. LastPass – www.lastpass.com

Cloud based password manager that integrates with web browsers on a PC or runs as an app on mobile devices.

Pros:

  • Access passwords across all your devices with one master password.
  • Digital wallet – store payment info securely.
  • Launch apps or a web site with log in info auto-filled.
  • Limited free version available, free 30 day premium trial.
  • Password sharing with others.
  • 2-Factor Authentication
  • Secure password generator – Create random secure passwords with 12-50 characters in length and custom complexity.
  • Uses AES-256 bit encryption used to store passwords. Passwords are not accessible by anyone, other than you.
  • Works with all major web browsers.

Cons:

  • Email only support.
  • There can be a delay in the password sync across devices.
  • Does not alert when a site is breached.

2. Dashlane – www.dashlane.com

Final thoughts:

While both Dashlane and LastPass are the most popular as password managers around, its Dashlane that Skyline IT Services would recommend. It may be a little more expensive, but in terms of the most complete package, Dashlane can’t be beaten, at least not by Lastpass.
